HSH Farm/Ranchstay is a specialized homestay program for those interested in a true language and culture adventure.

As with all our homestays, farm/ranchstays are selected first and foremost according to HSH’s tried and true criteria- safety, security, and comfort being the trademark of all HSH placements.

To guarantee our standard, every farm and ranch is visited and vetted in person, by an experienced HSH staff person.

As part of the farm or ranch family, participants are expected to contribute in all and sundry chores along with the host members themselves. Depending on the placement, responsibilities may vary considerably and will be delegated according to the strengths and interests the particular participant demonstrates, at the host’s discretion.

Applicants must therefore be open and flexible, and have a willingness to work hard, enjoy getting dirty, and have a genuine love of the rural and rustic lifestyle.

From cattle farms, to horse-breeding operations, to agricultural management , dude ranches, rider training facilities, outback lodges, and trail-riding outfitters, the HSH farm/ranchstay program is the ultimate real-Canadian experience. Volunteers work on average about 7 hours a day five to six days a week. Remember that life in the outback is anything but predictable though, so expect fluctuating tasks and hours of work according to the variables that nature throws this way.

No farm experience is necessary, however a familiarity working with livestock, agriculture, irrigation, handywork/maintenance, western riding, and outdoorsmanship, and any other skill sets that apply in a rural style environment, may all be an asset.

A rural program by definition, many of our farm/ranchstay placements can be quite removed from larger population centers and the modern conveniences and amenities you may be used to. Internet in outback regions is not always reliable either. While it is included free of charge to you, it is very expensive for your host so should only be used for emailing purposes – sorry, no downloading!

Participants who require formal English instruction prior to farm placement can register through SN/HSH at one of our approved partner schools in Vancouver, and benefit from our combined program package-rates.
